Changes to Video
Editing at MVNU over the Summer of 2006
There have been many changes to the video editing system at MVNU over
the summer to try and help with the increased demand for this service.
Please read this document carefully
so you know how to utilize the new facilities and so you won't loose any
data due to the changes.
- LLRC12 has moved from being the main editing
lab to mainly being a video import/export lab. Utilize this lab for
importing your clips from miniDV tape, DVD or VHS tape. You can then
move to another machine in the Genuse lab in order to edit your
clips after you have copied them up to the server.
- Firewire cables are being added to the iMacs
in the Gnuse lab so you can import your video also in there if you
still have your digital camcorder. You can also use the extended
hours lab iMacs, but be advised that we do not have high speed
networking capabilities in there so it will take longer to copy your
project to the server. We have upgraded to gigabit Ethernet for the
Genuse lab iMacs which will reduce your file copy times.
- We have purchased a large data storage array
that you will use for the saving of your video clips.
In order to use this, you will need to sign up
for an account at least 2 business days in advance at the
following URL:
http://helpdesk.mvnu.edu/forms/videoaccreq.html
- When importing data, make sure you import it
to the local "persistent storage drive". If this drive is full, you
will want to clear it out first and "empty the trash".
Make sure you login and copy this project to
your network storage before leaving your station (which may
take 2-10 minutes depending on project size). If you do not do this,
someone else may delete your project from persistent storage in
order to make room for their project and you will have lost it.
- When editing your project, it is recommended
that you download it to the local persistent storage, edit it, and
then load it back up when finished. You can possibly edit it
directly on the server but speed and stability may become issues
depending on project size.
- When you are finished with your project, all
machines in the Genuse lab have the capability of mastering your
DVD. If you want to output it to VHS tape or back to miniDV, you
will need to utilize the LLRC12 lab.
- Please make sure you delete your project from
the network storage when you are finished. This is a shared storage
medium. In order to make sure that everyone can get their projects
completed over the year we ask you to clean up any unneeded data on
this system. Also, please note that this drive is not being
backed up. If you have any major projects that you are concerned
about having potential data loss, we recommend you purchase an
external firewire or USB 2.0 drive.
We are trying to accommodate this rapid growth
by adding facilities as budget allows. Please be patient as we add
to these features and give us feedback as you experience problems or
find them useful. Contact the helpdesk at ext. 5555 with any
questions.
